What is B-roll? (and why it’s important to capture it on your phone!)

When you're taking videos of your kids or family events, you want to capture all the special moments and memories, right? B-roll is a term used in video production to describe extra footage that supplements the main footage. In other words, it's additional footage that helps to tell a more complete story of the moment or event you're capturing.

Taking b-roll can be a great way to capture more of what you're recording. Here are a few reasons why you should consider capturing b-roll alongside those cute videos of your kids:

1. It captures more memories: By taking additional footage of the surroundings, the people, and other interesting details, you can capture more of the memories associated with the event. When you look back on the video later, you'll be able to see more of the little moments and details that made the event so special (think footage of makeup spread out on a bathroom counter as you get your daughter ready for her ballet recital).

2. It helps to tell a more complete story: With b-roll footage, you can add more context and details to the video. For example, if you're filming a birthday party, you can capture footage of the decorations, the presents, and other details that help to tell the story of the event.

3. It adds depth to your memories: By using b-roll, you can create a more immersive experience for yourself and your family when you look back on the video. You'll be able to see and hear more of the details and context of the event, which can make the memories feel more vivid and real.

So, if you're a parent who wants to capture all the special moments and memories of your kids and family events, b-roll footage is definitely something you should incorporate.

And THEN - when you go ahead and have a film made from all those memories, the final result will have so much more depth and details than just continuous footage of people.

Happy filming!
